Instrument trays, baskets and containers hold instruments during cleaning, sterilization, storage and use. The right choice protects delicate instruments, lets steam and water reach every surface, and makes sets quicker to pack and check.
In short
Use perforated baskets and trays for cleaning and steam sterilization, solid trays for laying out instruments, and boxes or rigid containers for storage and transport. Size trays to the set, not the other way round.
Types of instrument trays#
| Type | Best for |
|---|---|
| Perforated baskets | Washer-disinfectors and steam sterilization; water and steam pass through |
| Solid instrument trays | Laying out instruments on a trolley, holding fluids |
| Instrument boxes with lids | Storing and carrying small sets |
| Rigid sterilization containers | Holding complete sets through sterilization and storage, with filters or valves |
| Racks and holders | Keeping instruments separated and open during cleaning |
Choosing the right size#
A tray that is too small forces instruments to pile up, which blocks cleaning and damages tips. A tray that is too large lets instruments slide around. Lay the set out first, leaving space for hinged instruments to sit open, then choose the tray size.
Materials#
Stainless steel trays and baskets are durable, can be autoclaved repeatedly, and are easy to clean. Some containers use anodised aluminium for lighter weight. Silicone mats and pin holders can be added to stop instruments moving and to protect delicate tips.
Organising instruments on instrument trays#
Packing checklist
- Heavy instruments at the bottom, delicate ones on top.
- Hinged instruments open or on the first ratchet tooth.
- Sharp tips protected with tip guards.
- A tray list, ideally with a photo, for every set.
- Weight within your sterile services’ limits.
Frequently asked questions#
Why are sterilization baskets perforated?#
Perforations let water, detergent and steam reach every surface, and let condensate drain so the load dries properly.
Can solid trays be used in an autoclave?#
Solid trays can be sterilized, but they can trap water. For sets that go through the autoclave, perforated trays are usually better.
What is the benefit of rigid containers?#
They protect sets during transport and storage and reduce the need for wraps, though they need their own cleaning and maintenance.
