Nasal specula open the nostril so the clinician can examine the nasal cavity or operate inside it. ENT clinics, GP surgeries and theatres use different nasal specula depending on whether the job is a quick examination or a longer procedure.

In short

Thudichum specula are small and simple, ideal for examination. Killian and Cottle specula have longer blades for deeper views and surgery. Choose blade length to match the depth you need to see.

Common nasal specula#

Pattern Design Typical use
Thudichum Small, sprung wire with two short blades Examining the nasal vestibule and front of the nose
Killian Scissor-style handles, long blades Deeper examination and nasal surgery
Cottle Long, narrow blades Septal and nasal surgery
Vienna (Hartmann) Hinged with medium blades Examination and minor procedures

Examination or surgery?#

For routine examination in clinics, small specula such as Thudichum or short Vienna patterns are quick to use and comfortable for the patient. For surgery and deeper views, Killian and Cottle specula with longer blades hold the nostril open further back and leave the surgeon’s other hand free for instruments.

Blade length#

Killian and Cottle specula are commonly made with a range of blade lengths, for example around 50 to 90 mm. Longer blades reach deeper; shorter blades are more comfortable for examination. Many ENT sets include two or three lengths.

What to check#

Quality checklist

  • The blades open evenly and stay parallel.
  • Blade edges are smooth and rounded to protect the nasal lining.
  • Springs or joints move smoothly without stiffness.
  • The speculum holds its opening without slipping closed.
