DeBakey forceps are long, slim thumb forceps designed to hold delicate tissue without crushing or piercing it. They were developed for vascular surgery but are now used across general, thoracic and many other specialties wherever tissue must be handled gently.
In short
DeBakey forceps have fine, interlocking longitudinal grooves that grip without damaging tissue. Choose the length for the depth of the wound and the tip width for how delicate the tissue is.
The DeBakey jaw pattern#
The gripping surface of DeBakey forceps has fine grooves running along the length of each jaw: typically a single row on one side meshing with a double row on the other. The pattern spreads pressure along the tissue and holds it securely without teeth that could puncture vessel walls or bowel. This is why the pattern is described as atraumatic.
Lengths and tip widths#
DeBakey forceps are made in a wide range of lengths, from short versions of around 15 cm for superficial work to long versions of 30 cm or more for deep abdominal and thoracic surgery. Tip widths also vary, commonly from about 1.5 mm to 3.5 mm.
| Choice | Shorter or finer | Longer or wider |
|---|---|---|
| Length | Superficial and small vessels | Deep cavities, thoracic and abdominal work |
| Tip width | Fine, delicate tissue and small vessels | Larger structures, firmer hold |
Where DeBakey forceps are used#
- Vascular surgery, holding vessel walls and grafts.
- General and abdominal surgery, handling bowel and other delicate tissue.
- Thoracic and cardiac surgery, where long versions reach deep structures.
- Many other specialties as a general atraumatic forceps.
Related atraumatic instruments#
The DeBakey jaw pattern is also used on vascular clamps, tissue forceps with ring handles and other instruments, so the name often appears in catalogues outside thumb forceps. When ordering, describe the instrument type as well as the pattern.
Checking DeBakey forceps#
Quality checklist
- The grooves mesh evenly along the full length of the jaws.
- The tips meet exactly, without crossing, when the forceps are closed.
- The spring tension is light and even for fine control.
- The jaw edges are smooth, with no burrs that could snag tissue.
Frequently asked questions#
Are DeBakey forceps toothed?#
No. DeBakey forceps have fine longitudinal grooves instead of teeth, which is what makes them atraumatic.
Can DeBakey forceps be used on skin?#
They can, but toothed forceps such as Adson usually give a better grip on skin with less pressure. DeBakey forceps are best kept for delicate tissue.
Which length should a general set include?#
Many general sets include a medium length of around 20 cm, with longer versions added for abdominal or thoracic trays.
