Paediatric extraction forceps are smaller versions of adult forceps, designed for primary (baby) teeth and children’s mouths. Smaller beaks fit the narrow crowns of primary teeth, and shorter handles are easier to control in a small mouth and less intimidating for young patients.

In short

Paediatric extraction forceps have smaller beaks and handles. Upper and lower universal patterns cover most primary teeth, with molar patterns added for primary molars.

Why smaller forceps?#

Primary teeth have smaller crowns, thinner roots and, in the case of molars, widely spread roots that surround developing permanent teeth. Forceps with smaller, well-fitting beaks grip securely without needing excessive force. Smaller handles also suit the clinician’s hand position in a child’s mouth.

Common paediatric patterns#

Pattern (American style) Used for
150S Upper primary teeth (maxillary universal, small)
151S Lower primary teeth (mandibular universal, small)
Paediatric molar forceps Primary molars, upper and lower
Paediatric root forceps Retained roots of primary teeth

English (European) pattern children’s forceps use their own numbering and handle shapes. State the style and pattern, or send a photo, when ordering.

A simple paediatric extraction kit#

  • Upper and lower universal paediatric forceps.
  • Paediatric molar forceps if primary molars are often extracted.
  • Small straight elevators and a fine root elevator.
  • A mirror, probe and tweezers for examination.

Quality checklist

  • Beaks meet evenly and are finely serrated inside.
  • The joint is smooth, with no side play.
  • Handles are comfortable and give a secure grip.
  • Pattern numbers are clearly marked.

Frequently asked questions#

Can adult forceps be used on primary teeth?#

Sometimes, but adult beaks are often too large to fit primary crowns properly. Paediatric forceps give a better grip.

What does the S in 150S mean?#

It indicates a small (paediatric) version of the No. 150 maxillary universal forceps.

Do children’s dental clinics need special elevators?#

Smaller elevators and fine root elevators are useful, especially for retained roots.
