Sickle scalers are hand instruments with a pointed tip and a triangular cross-section. They are designed to remove supragingival calculus, especially from proximal surfaces and around contact points. Because of their pointed tip, sickle scalers are generally kept for use above the gumline.

In short

Sickle scalers have two cutting edges meeting at a sharp point. Use them for supragingival calculus; switch to curettes below the gumline. Choose straight-shank designs for anterior teeth and contra-angled designs for posterior teeth.

Design#

The blade of a sickle scaler is triangular in cross-section, with two cutting edges that meet at a pointed tip. The pointed back and tip are useful for reaching under contacts but can damage soft tissue and root surfaces below the gumline, which is why curettes (with rounded toes and backs) are used there.

Common sickle scaler patterns#

Pattern Shank Typical area
H6/H7 Straight or slightly angled Anterior teeth
204S Contra-angled Posterior teeth
Jacquette (for example 30/33, 34/35) Straight blades, various angles Anterior and posterior teeth
Nevi and similar Contra-angled, thin blades Tight posterior contacts

Names and numbering vary between manufacturers, so describe the shape or send a reference when ordering.

Sickle scalers or curettes?#

Sickle scalers are efficient for removing heavy deposits above the gumline. Curettes, with their rounded toe and back, are designed for subgingival work and root surfaces. Most hygiene cassettes include both.

Sharpening checklist

  • Sharpen both cutting edges evenly to keep the point centred.
  • Maintain the original angle between face and lateral surfaces.
  • Avoid over-sharpening the tip, which weakens it.
  • Test with a plastic test stick before use.

Frequently asked questions#

Can sickle scalers be used below the gumline?#

They are generally not recommended there, because the pointed tip and back can injure soft tissue and root surfaces.

What is the difference between H6/H7 and 204S?#

H6/H7 scalers are commonly used on anterior teeth, while the contra-angled 204S is designed for posterior teeth.

How often should sickle scalers be sharpened?#

Regularly, often after every few uses, depending on how heavily they are used.
