Sponge-holding forceps hold gauze swabs for skin preparation, blotting the surgical field and retracting gently. They are also used in gynaecology and obstetrics to grasp tissue. Because they appear in almost every major set, it is worth choosing a pattern and length that suit your procedures.

In short

Sponge-holding forceps have ring-shaped jaws and a ratchet. Foerster is the most common pattern; Rampley is a longer variation. Serrated jaws hold swabs securely, smooth jaws are kinder when grasping tissue.

Common patterns#

  • Foerster: oval, ring-shaped jaws, straight or curved, usually around 20 to 25 cm long. The most widely used sponge-holding forceps.
  • Rampley: a longer pattern with ring jaws and serrations, often used for skin preparation on larger fields.
  • Gross-Maier and similar: ring-jawed patterns used for swabbing and grasping in gynaecology.

Serrated or smooth jaws#

Jaw Advantage Typical use
Serrated Holds gauze swabs securely Skin preparation, blotting
Smooth Gentle on tissue Grasping tissue, gynaecology and obstetrics

Straight or curved#

Straight forceps are the usual choice for skin preparation. Curved jaws can help when swabbing in deeper or angled areas. Many general sets include one of each.

Using sponge-holding forceps#

Fold the swab so it sits firmly in the ring jaws without loose ends, and close the forceps on the first or second ratchet tooth. A loosely held swab can come free in the wound, so check that it is secure before use and include swabs in the count.

Quality checklist

  • The ring jaws meet evenly all the way round.
  • Serrations mesh cleanly without gaps.
  • The ratchet holds firmly on each tooth.
  • The finish is smooth, so swabs do not snag or tear.

Frequently asked questions#

What length should sponge-holding forceps be?#

Around 20 to 25 cm suits most procedures. Longer patterns help with large fields or deep work.

Can sponge-holding forceps be used on tissue?#

Smooth-jawed versions are often used to grasp tissue, for example the cervix in gynaecology. Serrated versions are best kept for swabs.

Why do some sets include several?#

Skin preparation is quicker with two or three forceps loaded with swabs, and one is often kept for swabbing during the procedure.
