Surgical probes are slender instruments used to explore wounds, sinus tracts, fistulas and cavities. Grooved directors are related instruments with a channel along their length that guides a scalpel or scissors safely. Both are inexpensive, but having the right sizes in a set saves time and improves safety.
In short
Probes explore; directors guide. Malleable probes bend to follow a tract, ball-tipped ends reduce the risk of creating a false passage, and grooved directors protect underlying tissue when cutting.
Types of surgical probes#
- Malleable probes: soft, bendable probes, often double-ended with a ball tip and an eye, that can be shaped to follow a tract.
- Probe-pointed and ball-tipped probes: rigid or semi-rigid probes with rounded ends for exploring wounds without piercing tissue.
- Fistula probes: slim probes, sometimes with an eye for passing a seton or suture, used in anal fistula surgery.
- Lacrimal probes: very fine probes used in eye and tear duct procedures.
Grooved directors#
A grooved director has a channel along its length. It is passed under tissue, for example along a fistula tract or under a fascial layer, and the surgeon cuts along the groove with a scalpel or scissors. The director protects the tissue beneath. Some patterns include a tongue-tie (frenulum) slot at the handle end.
| Instrument | Main purpose |
|---|---|
| Malleable probe | Exploring curved tracts and cavities |
| Ball-tipped probe | Exploring wounds safely |
| Fistula probe | Defining fistula tracts, passing setons |
| Grooved director | Guiding a cut, protecting deeper tissue |
Materials#
Malleable probes are made from a softer metal or annealed stainless steel so they bend without breaking. Rigid probes and directors are made from stainless steel. Silver and silver-alloy probes are also traditional because they bend easily.
Before you buy surgical probes
- The tips are smooth and rounded, with no sharp edges.
- Malleable probes bend smoothly and return to shape when straightened.
- Eyes are smooth inside, so sutures and setons do not fray.
- The groove on directors is even along its length.
Frequently asked questions#
How long are surgical probes?#
Common lengths range from about 13 to 20 cm. Lacrimal probes are much finer and shorter.
Can malleable probes be straightened after use?#
Yes, they can be straightened by hand, but repeated bending at the same point eventually weakens them.
Are probes included in minor surgery sets?#
Many incision and drainage and minor surgery sets include a malleable probe for exploring abscess cavities.
