Ear instruments are small and delicate because the ear canal is narrow and sensitive. ENT clinics, audiology services and general practices use a small set of them for examination, wax removal and foreign body removal. Good quality instruments make these procedures quicker and more comfortable for the patient.

In short

A basic ear set includes aural specula in several sizes, Hartmann (alligator) ear forceps, ear curettes or a Jobson Horne probe, and an ear hook. All should have smooth, fine tips.

Common ear instruments#

Instrument Use
Aural (ear) specula Opening the ear canal for a clear view, in several diameters
Hartmann ear forceps Fine, alligator-style forceps for wax, debris and foreign bodies
Ear curettes (for example Buck) Removing wax with a small loop or cup
Jobson Horne probe Double-ended: a small ring curette and a probe, wrapped with cotton for cleaning
Ear hooks Removing foreign bodies and hard wax

Hartmann ear forceps#

Hartmann forceps, often called alligator forceps, have a long slim shaft and tiny jaws that open with a scissor-style handle. Only the jaws move, so the shaft stays still in the ear canal. They are made with smooth or serrated jaws and in different lengths.

Aural specula#

Ear specula are funnel-shaped and come in sets of diameters. Larger sizes give a wider view in adults; smaller sizes suit children and narrow canals. Reusable stainless steel specula can be sterilized repeatedly.

Quality checklist

  • Tips are fine, smooth and rounded, with no sharp edges.
  • Forceps jaws meet precisely and open smoothly.
  • Curette loops are even and correctly angled.
  • Specula have smooth rims and a polished inner surface.

Frequently asked questions#
