Dental explorers are fine, flexible, pointed instruments used to feel tooth surfaces. Clinicians use them to detect calculus, irregular restoration margins and surface defects. The shape of the tip decides which surfaces each explorer reaches best, so most clinics stock more than one design of dental explorers.
In short
The shepherd’s hook (No. 23) is the general-purpose examination explorer. Pigtail and cowhorn explorers reach proximal surfaces, and the ODU 11/12 is designed for subgingival calculus detection.
Common dental explorers#
| Explorer | Shape | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Shepherd’s hook (No. 23) | Curved hook | Supragingival examination, restorations |
| No. 17 | Straight shank with a short angled tip | Proximal and subgingival areas |
| Pigtail / cowhorn (No. 2, No. 3) | Paired curved tips | Proximal surfaces, shallow pockets |
| ODU 11/12 | Long, angled shank | Subgingival calculus detection in posterior teeth |
| Orban-type | Tip at right angle to the shank | Anterior subgingival areas |
Single- or double-ended#
Many explorers are double-ended, combining two tips (for example a shepherd’s hook with a No. 17) or a probe and an explorer. Double-ended instruments reduce the number of instruments in the cassette.
Tactile sensitivity#
A good explorer transmits small vibrations from the tip to the fingers. Thin, flexible shanks and lightweight or hollow handles improve this tactile feedback. A worn or bent tip reduces sensitivity and can scratch surfaces.
Care checklist
- Inspect tips regularly under magnification.
- Keep explorer tips protected in cassettes.
- Replace explorers with blunt or bent tips.
- Do not use explorers to remove calculus; use scalers instead.
