Gynaecology instruments are used for examination and for procedures such as IUD insertion, endometrial sampling and minor gynaecological surgery. Beyond specula, a small group of instruments appears in almost every gynaecology set. This guide explains what each is for so clinics and buyers can order with confidence.

In short

Tenaculum forceps steady the cervix, a uterine sound measures the uterus, dilators open the cervical canal gradually, and curettes and polyp forceps remove tissue. Each comes in several patterns and sizes.

Common gynaecology instruments#

Instrument Purpose Common patterns
Tenaculum forceps Holding and steadying the cervix Single-tooth, Pozzi
Uterine sound Measuring the depth and direction of the uterus Sims (graduated, often malleable)
Cervical dilators Gradually dilating the cervical canal Hegar (single-ended sizes), Pratt and Hawkin-Ambler (tapered, double-ended)
Uterine curettes Sampling or removing endometrial tissue Sharp and blunt, various sizes
Polyp forceps Grasping and removing polyps Straight or curved, ring jaws
Sponge-holding forceps Swabbing and holding tissue Foerster, Rampley

Dilators#

Hegar dilators are usually supplied as a graduated set, each dilator marked with its diameter in millimetres. Tapered dilators such as Pratt and Hawkin-Ambler have a gradual taper and are often double-ended with two sizes. When ordering, state the pattern and the range of sizes needed.

Uterine sounds#

A uterine sound has a graduated scale in centimetres and a rounded tip. Malleable sounds can be gently curved to follow the shape of the uterus.

Quality checklist

  • Graduations on sounds and dilators are clear and durable.
  • Tenaculum teeth meet precisely and the ratchet holds.
  • Curette edges are even and correctly sharpened.
  • All tips are smooth and well finished.
